Lenexa, Kan. – From spinach salad to spinach sausage balls and even spinach coconut chiffon cake, the City of Lenexa is calling for entries for its 2010 Spinach Recipe Contest, one of the highlight events at Lenexa’s annual Spinach Festival.
Food enthusiasts and chefs of all levels who are 18 or older and ready to get creative with this leafy green vegetable can enter recipes in four categories for a chance to win cash prizes.
Contestants must bring a copy of the recipe for each entry, along with a completed entry form. Recipes may be published in the Lenexa Historical Society’s Spinach Cookbook.
Entries should be brought to the judging tent north of the Legler Barn Museum between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Another option for dropping off entries is to use the convenient drive-up site, located at the shuttle area in the Fire Station parking lot off Lackman Road.
Created as a celebration of Lenexa’s farming history, the Spinach Festival draws thousands of visitors to Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park each year to browse 80 art, fine crafts and antique booths, and to enjoy a wide variety of family activities, live entertainment and spinach-themed festivities and contests.
The Spinach Festival is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11. Admission is $1 for adults; children under 13 are free.
Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park is located at 87th Street Parkway and Lackman Road in Lenexa. Satellite parking is available at City Hall located at 87th Street Parkway and Monrovia, and the business park located at the southeast corner of 95th and Lackman. A free, continuous shuttle service will be offered to and from those locations.

ACF Greater Kansas City Chefs Association was one of four regional Chapter of the Year award winners. The chapter was recognized for its exemplary performance in the community and to the culinary industry over the past year. The chapter has maintained or increased a strong membership; held a culinary competition, certification practical test or other ACF-approved event in the last 12 months; nominated an outstanding and dedicated member for a 2010 award; contributed to the community by participating in a fundraising function; and positively represented the chapter and ACF in the community and culinary industry.

The ACF- Greater Kansas Chefs Association was very well represented on the various award ceremony stages.
First of all, as a chapter, we were awarded the "Chapter Acheivement Award" and the "Outstanding Chapter of the Year" for all of the Central Region.
Lindy Robinson, Dean-JCCC earned the "Cutting Edge" award.
The JCCC Knowledge Bowl team earned a Bronze Medal.
Jennifer Kelm, JCCC, Lake Quivira won the "Make-it-mini Dessert Trio" competition.
Sheena Maisch, JCCC, MIssion HIlls CC, participated in the Student Chef of Year Contest.
JCCC - Culinary Team earned a high Silver Medal and placed fourth in the Student Team Competition.
Paul Santaularia, Northland Career Center, Chapter President was awarded a President's Medallion by ACF President Michael Ty and was a candidate in the Chef Educator of Year category.
Nguyet Nguyen took first place in the Pastry Chef of the Year competition.

2010 Overview of the "Taste of Elegance"™ Competition
The Missouri Pork Producers Association held the Kansas City “Taste of Elegance” Competition on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at the Marriott in Overland Park.
Taste of Elegance competitions began in 1989. The event was created as a way to showcase culinary professionalism in creativity and cooking of pork. The intention was and still is, to bring attention to pork and the chefs that prepare and serve it well.
General Overview of the competition
This was a cooking competition in which 12-15 chefs from a region competed for a panel of judges. Prizes are awarded for the first, second and third places and since this was a public event there was also a “People’s Choice” award given. Prizes awarded was as follows:

Second Place $500
Third Place $250
People’s Choice Award
Chefs were asked to prepare 300-350 small samples of their entrée for a reception following the formal judging. Guests had the opportunity to sample and vote for their favorite entrée.
The first place winner was Chef Matt Chatfield who will have the opportunity to compete in the National Taste of Elegance. The National Taste of Elegance will be held in the Spring of 2010. Winners of the National Taste of Elegance have previously been awarded $5000. In addition to the monetary awards involved, there is usually a considerable amount of publicity for both the winning chef and the establishment he or she represents.
This competition is structured to allow the opportunity to showcase an establishment and culinary creativity with Pork, The Other White Meat as a Center of the Plate item.
